General description: Monsoon in North Bengal hills is magical. Thos is the time when the parrotbills become very active, the bazas start to nest, and Hill Partridges show up with their chicks. Though there will be rain, but the birding will be great. We will cover mostly Senchal, lower Singalila and Mahananda Wildlife Sanctuary areas during this tour.
Day 1:
Reach NJP Railway station or Bagdogra airport in the morning. After meet and greet we will leave for Darjeeling, the queen of hills via some of the famous tea gardens such as Gopaldhara, Thurbo etc. We will stop briefly at Mirik lake for Black tailed Crake, a mega rarity from the hills. Later, transfer to Darjeeling. Post lunch birding at Darjeeling town like Mahakal road, Jalapahar road etc. Night stay at Darjeeling.
Targets:
Black tailed Crake, Oriental Turtle Dove, Red billed Leiothrix, Brownish flanked Bush Warbler, Chestnut crowned Laughingthrush, White tailed Nuthatch, Green tailed Sunbird, Grey winged Blackbird etc.
Day 2:
Start very early (by 5:30 am) in the morning after a steaming hot cup of tea for Tiger hill and Senchal Wildlife Sanctuary. There is a small hide at Tiger hill which is great for Hill Partridges and Laughingthrushes. We will also cover Senchal Wildlife Sanctuary for parrotbills, bush warblers, and Fulvettas. Lunch en route Ghoom. Post lunch in Ghoom, Sukhiyapokhri, Bijanbari area. Get back to Darjeeling in the evening.
Targets:
Hill Partridge, Spotted, Scaly, Grey Sided, Chestnut crowned Laughingthrush, Grey sided, Brownish flanked, Hume’s and Aberrant Bush Warbler, Broad billed Warbler, Great, Brown, Fulvous and Black throated Parrotbill, Rufous throated Wren Babbler, Scaly breasted Cupwing, Yellow bellied Fairy Fantail, Large Niltava, Golden breasted Fulvetta and many more.
Day 3:
Early morning session in Lepchajagat or Paglajhora area depending on the sighting opportunities. Post lunch transfer to Latpanchar while birding enroute. Night stay at Latpanchar.
Targets:
Sunbirds, Rufous winged Fulvetta, Stripe throated Yuhina, Yellow bellied Fairy Fantail, Green Cochoa (rarity), Blue winged Siva, Whiskered Yuhina, Fire breasted Flowerpecker, Chestnut bellied Nuthatch, Golden fronted Leaf bird etc.
Day 4:
Whole day birding at Latpanchar and surrounding areas. There is a hide in Latpanchar which is also very productive (not included in costs) We might have a short night session depending on the weather. Night stay at Latpanchar.
Targets:
Red headed Trogon (rare), Hodgson’s Frogmouth, Mountain Scops Owl, Rufous necked Hornbill (possibility), Common Green Magpie, White browed Scimitar Babbler, White browed Shrike Babbler, Velvet fronted Nuthatch, Long tailed Minivet etc. Mountain Scops Owl at night.
Day 5:
We will start very early (around 4:30 am) with our bags packed for Rogtong, Shivkhola area. Breakfast and Lunch enroute. In the afternoon we will drop you at NJP/Bagdogra. Trip ends.
Targets:
Great Hornbill, Black Baza, Jerdon’s Baza, Crested Treeswift, Violet Cuckoo, Emerald Cuckoo, Long billed Thrush, Chestnut bellied Nuthatch, Asian Barred Owlet, Dollarbird, Thick billed, Pin tailed Green Pigeon, Lesser necklaced Laughingthrush etc.
A few important notes:
1. Carry proper rain gear like Raincoat, poncho etc.
2. Better to carry leech socks
3. Itinerary is subjected to change depending on the sighting opportunities.
